Visiting Wied Ghollieqa Nature Reserve

On the 5th October 2010 our Form 3 Biology students accompanied by their teachers visited Wied Ghollieqa Nature Reserve.  The aim of this visit was to familiarize the students with the indigenous trees and shrubs present in the area.  This helped our budding biologists to appreciate the biodiversity typical of a Maltese valley system.  On arrival the guide familarised us with the place (its history and how it was transferred into a protected site). The guide also informed us on the different types of ecosystems found at Wied Ghollieqa namely Maquis, Riparian Woodland and Mediterranean Woodland.  We were then taken on a tour around part of the valley and detailed information was given about some of the trees there namely Carob, Pine, Sandarac, Judas amongst others.  Reference was made to the birds visiting the place, the rubble walls, various other plants and the animals that have made Wied Ghollieqa their home.
